The House That Love Built

When I first met DeShanna, she told me about a long history of experiences she's had as a Black, queer woman in Delaware. And then I met her children, who face an intersection of hardships by living in a society that systematically disenfrachises Black, differently abled, and transgender people. Her two daughters, Trinity (17) and Hyperion (10), are both young trans women who are on the autism spectrum. Their identities are often invalidated by their peers and people in positions of power, but DeShanna has fought hard against inequitable school systems and blatant discrimination against her daughters.

DeShanna's two sons also face adversity as young Black individuals in society. Lucien (16) is a prodigal musician who can play cello better than any other. His vision is slowly degenerating, so he's learning to live life with little to no sight. Thane (6) is gender fluid and expresses themself through dance and clothing.

"I want to raise them in a home without trauma," said DeShanna, who has spent much time reflecting to her own traumatic experiences. "I want to make sure that they will never experience the worst of humanity, as I did, and I will ensure the world they grow into is a better and safer place."
